There are about 180 dairy cows in Mikkel Juhl Nielsen’s barns on his organic farm in Rønde.
He doesn’t know exactly how much nitrogen he emits by having them, but it’s less than some of his colleagues in conventional farming.
In the future, he could get money from them if he sells the quotas he receives for not emitting particularly much nitrogen. This is made possible by the nitrogen emission agreement, which minister for green tripartite Jeppe Bruus (S) presented yesterday together with the agreement circle.
This means that a larger conventional neighboring farm will in the future have the opportunity to buy his quotas and emit more nitrogen.
But that possibility helps to counteract what organic farming stands for, believes Mikkel Juhl Nielsen.
– It just seems wrong that you should be able to pay to pollute a bit more. It should be a shared responsibility for all farmers to pollute as little as possible, he says.
